What if you could test two versions of the same story without losing either?

Every screenwriter knows the fear: the scene works, but you have a better idea. If you change it and it doesn't land, you lose what was already good. So you duplicate the file — script_final_v3.fdx, script_final_v3_ALTERNATE.fdx — and three days later you can't tell which is which.

Programmers solved this problem fifteen years ago. It's called branching: you create a ramification of the story, experiment freely, and if you like it, you merge it back. If you don't, you throw it away — the original was never touched. Writing tools never brought this into the craft. Telos did.

A branch is a hypothesis

In Telos you don't duplicate files. You create a branch — a living copy of the project where everything is editable: scenes, characters, arcs, hooks. Want to test "what if the mentor doesn't die in act two?". Create the branch, rewrite the affected scenes, and the main project stays intact in its original version.

What changes relative to duplicating an .fdx: the branch knows what was altered. It's not a loose file you have to compare line by line from memory. It's a copy that carries the genealogy of the change.

Compare before you decide

When both versions coexist, the question stops being "which one did I save last?" and becomes "which one tells the story better?". Telos shows a divergence heatmap: which scenes changed between branches, where the two conflict, the size of the difference. You see the cost of the hypothesis before committing to it.

And when you decide, the merge isn't copy-and-paste. You choose what comes in — including item by item, with cherry-pick: "I want the new dialogue from scene 12 of the alternate branch, but I keep the ending from the main one". The AI can suggest the resolution of each conflict, reading the authorial voice and the arcs of the characters involved.

Why this matters to whoever writes

Screenwriting is, at heart, a process of decisions you can't easily undo. Every good "what if" you didn't test out of fear of losing what you had is a story that ended up worse than it could have been. Branching removes the fear. You test the tragic ending and the ambiguous ending side by side. You rewrite the whole second act on a branch and compare it with the original. You let the story breathe in two directions before choosing.

No other screenwriting tool in the world does this today. It's not one more feature — it's a different way of working, borrowed from those who've versioned for decades and adapted to what the screenwriter actually does: hesitate, test, decide.
